"THE RADIO SHOW"

with Ron Wertheimer

Spring 1967

Posted by Jerry Klein.

"The Radio Show," created, written, and directed by, and starring, Ron Wertheimer, was a comedy skit and variety show that ran from February to May, 1967. It was taped with a live audience (once in Peabody Hall but mostly in Studio B). Jerry Klein was engineer for the program and still has tapes of all of them... most of them are the master tapes. Click here to read the program summaries.

Remember the opening? "The following program is in COLOR! This an R [Ron Wertheimer] and M [Mickey Saperstone] production.... HONK!! [from a big brass horn]." (You'll hear it in the first clip below.)

Here are a few memorable sound clips

The intro of the third show (taped March 7, aired March 13, 1967) (1 minute 33 seconds)

Also from the third show: Howie Shapiro interrupt's Ron's singing for a special news bulletin (3 minutes 7 seconds)

From the first program (taped February 21, aired February 27, 1967), the first episode of "Normalman." Although Bob Rothstein was cast in the title role, he was not available for the first episode, so Mike Muderick filled in (it was one of the few times, if not the only time, that Mike's voice was heard on the air). Bob did episodes 2 through 8 and Ron Wertheimer took over for episodes 9 and 10. However, I always thought Mike was the best voice for the role. (9 minutes 20 seconds) By the way, Normalman ran for mayor of Philadelphia in later episodes. Here is the Normalman for Mayor campaign poster, drawn by (who else?) Ron Wertheimer.

Ron's close and the end credits read by Joe Ryan. From the first show (taped February 21, aired February 27, 1967). (1 minute 26 seconds)
