Bernie Alan Canter

His Story

Well. I finally found it. The WRTI homepage (which I had requested several years ago when I found the TU homepage.) I somehow linked to the Jerry Klein annex and there I was in a picture with a group of unidentified actors...yes I remembered most of them and I'll send along some IDs but right now I'm reeling with all the "stuff" I found on your pages.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Bernard A. Canter, BS '59, with my degree form the School of Business, Department of Journalism, Radio Division...and my degree is in Radio. For many years (under my professional name Bernie Alan) I have worked in radio and TV and for the past fifteen years I have been the announcer at KCET, the PBS station in Los Angeles. I worked at WRTI from September of 1955 through June of 1959 and in September of 1970 I returned as Station Manager. I left a year later to accept a job on the west coast.

I have very fond memories of John Roberts, Bill Seibel, Dr. Del Dusenberry (who arrived the same year I did and in whose first class Radio 101 I had my first class.)

I won't bore you with more trivia now but I'll try to connect soon and ID some of those pictures. Thanks for the data

After ODing on your page last night I went to bed and woke up realizing that I had called Radio 43 by another number...a mistake caused by the fact that I have hung around other colleges and universities.

I do know a few "whereabouts"...sort of. Joe Sands is living in Northridge and is a member of the Alumni Association. Last I heard he was teaching at CSUN after having left KCET. When I got the job at KCET, Joe was a VP and I hadn't seen him in 27-years. He didn't remember me. Dick Smith is also here on the coast somewhere. He saw me on TV and called and we kept in touch by phone for awhile but not recently. He was living in Glendale.

I was thrilled to see so many names that I recognized and I will check back again.

One other note. At the AFTRA convention in Philadelphia (where I was elected National Recording Secretary) I attended a social event and sat next to Ed Sciaky. I had no idea he was a WRTI alum and it never came up. Oh well, maybe next time.

I have recently discovered your page(s) and I am drawn back again and again.

I can't believe all of the great memories it has brought back.

For reference in John Roberts' old photos collection, number six which features a obscure Fred Hitchler also has Robin Pollack on the far left, then Jay Strasburg, Ron Rosen in the light jacket...and there on the far right, me at the age of about twenty, more than forty years ago.

I am in LA (KCET-TV) and I've been with this station for the last fifteen years. Feel free to publish my e-mail address though I have the feeling that not too many people remember me. (I also served as WRTI-FM station manager in 1971 before I moved west in September of that year.) Thanks for the fantastic material. It makes the internet even more worthwhile..

I re-visited your page and discovered a ton of stuff I had not got to before including the obits. I was shocked to see that Stan Salzman had died and I noticed too that you had asked for info on the WRTI production of "War of the Worlds." We did in the late fifties (probably '59) with Stan directing. I did the Orson Welles part and we were so close to the original it was quite gratifying to participate. I don't remember if we ran it on WRTI-Fm but we probably did. We had only ten watts and took a lot of "chances" in those days. I don't know if anyone will remember me at your reunion Sunday but I remember them.
