His Story

The following is an e-mail from George VanderGheynst to Gerry Wilkinson.

Hi Gerry,

Yes, I am the George VanderGheynst from Temple and WRTI. I was involved in technical activities at WRTI and have great memories of those years. I thoroughly enjoyed the web site you and others have created. A fantastic job! I was amazed at the depth of information, pictures, and sound bites. Mike Biel must have a massive tape library to have all those recorded shows. I enjoyed the picture of the sports guys and have shared it with family and friends. A football game at the old Temple Stadium. Great memories.

I had a chance to visit the new Temple studio and facilities about two years ago on a business trip to Philadelphia - quite a change from the old layout. There was something special about the old studio – the RCA audio mixing panels with the warmth of the tube electronics and noisy fader’s- the ATI tape cartridge machines that would not always recue properly - the donated ATI FM transmitter with intermittent power transformer. The new crew is missing the ambiance but in a discussion with the new chief engineering he was complaining about the lack of sufficient air conditioning. Air conditioning was not an issue for us since we did not broadcast 24 hours and year round. Always something.

A quick history:

While at Temple I worked summers for KYW Radio & TV. I met my wife, Suzanne, at KYW where she worked for the chief engineer. We were married in 1967 and have two grown children, Jean (1969) and Bryan (1972). I graduated from Temple in 1968 and was recruited by IBM in the Hudson Valley (Poughkeepsie area), NY. I spent 25 years with IBM in various technical and managerial positions, taking an early retirement in 1993 to start my own business. The business, NeuwGhent Technology, is in its sixth year, growing successfully. We manufacture electronic sensors and instrumentation for the motion and vibration monitoring industry and special gas sensors for the bio-environmental industry.
