Temple University To Start
Big Radio Extension Course

April 2, 1926 (The Camden Courier)

In keeping with its policy, laid down by the late Rev. Dr. Russell H. Conwell, its founder, to provide higher education for all those fit to receive it. Temple University, Philadelphia, is planning a great University extension course by means of radio.

This announcement was made yesterday by Dr. Charles E. Beury, President of Temple, who emphasized the fact that this will be the first time that an institution off higher learning in Philadelphia or Pennsylvania has offered the public lecture course "on the air."

As a beginning, a series of eleven popular lectures has been arranged, in conjunction with Station WOO, Wanamaker's, Philadelphia, to begin on April 16. According to the plan, the lectures will be delivered every Friday evening at 7:45 o'clock for eleven weeks. A different professor or instructor will speak on each of these nights and on a different phase of some interesting subject.

This first series will be given by Temple University to the public to ascertain from them for which subjects there exist the greatest need and interest. Temple University will wish to hear from the listeners so that, next year, the institution may be able to give those courses desired by the greatest number of people.

If it develops that there is a great demand for the radio lectures, Temple University intends to go to the trouble and expense of preparing regular University Extension prospecti, which then will be sent out to the "Radio Body."

In that way, said Dr. Beury, it is hoped to establish within the near future, Philadelphia first "University of the Air," thus taking advantage of one of the greatest advances made recently by applied science in order to carry out the late Dr. Conwell's ideals to give higher education to all those who wish and need it.
