: Read the linked article from April 5, 1996's edition of the Temple News entitled, "Baptist Temple boasts history as old as the university."

Among other things, this article provides the answer to a statement made in the Jan 2 article in the Phila Daily News by Temple Vice President and Treasurer, Martin Dorf.

He is quoted as saying: "The Baptist Temple is important but it has been somewhat mythologized. It's not the first building of Temple."

This Temple News article explains that the university was started in the basement of Conwell's PREVIOUS church, the Grace Baptist Church.

"What happened to it?" I hear you ask. It was conveniently torn down in 1969 and replaced by Gladfelter Hall, named after the man who was president when the Grace Baptist Church was torn down.
