Noam Pitlik, 66, an Emmy Award-winning television director and a
character actor who appeared in numerous series, died of lung cancer Feb.
18 at a hospital in Los Angeles. He was involved with WRTI in the 1950's.

He directed 100 episodes of the "Barney Miller" series, which ran from 1975
to 1982. His work on "Barney Miller" earned him Emmy, Peabody and
Directors Guild of America awards. He also directed more than 200
episodes of other prime-time TV series, including "Taxi," "Mr. Belvedere,"
"Wings" and "One Day at a Time."

Before going behind the camera, he had been a character actor on TV and
film. He appeared in 18 films, including "The Graduate" and the 1974 remake
of "The Front Page." On television he played Nazi officers in "Hogan's
Heroes," a psychiatric patient in "The Bob Newhart Show" and appeared in
such diverse series as "The Fugitive," "Ben Casey," "Gunsmoke" and "I
Dream of Jeannie." He recently returned to acting, playing Mr. Schmalen in
the TV series "Becker."
